Wooly Dutchman’s pipevine is a fast-growing, deciduous vine native to the central and southern U.S., thriving in moist, loamy soils with full sun to partial shade. Its large, heart-shaped leaves are densely covered with wooly hairs, and it produces small, hairy yellow or greenish flowers in late spring. The plant is a primary food source for the Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly, with the caterpillars feeding on its leaves, though the vine typically recovers from defoliation. The vine is moderately resistant to deer and can grow up to 30 feet, making it ideal for creating shade, privacy screens, or climbing on trellises and arbors. In the fall, it produces a grayish-brown capsule containing numerous seeds.
