Spider Milkweed, or Green Antelopehorn Milkweed, is a small plant that attracts Monarch butterflies and other insects, while being avoided by herbivores and livestock due to its irritating sap. It thrives in dry conditions, often found in sand prairies, pastures, and roadsides, and features rose-white flowers in showy clusters. The plant has a taproot and shorter height (about 12 inches), which limits its tolerance to competition from other vegetation. This is a valuable food source for Monarchs during migration. Best suited for sunny, well-drained spots, it’s ideal for pollinator gardens, naturalized areas, and drought-tolerant plantings.
