Lead Plant is a slow-growing shrub that blooms in early summer, producing striking lavender flower spikes with bright purple blossoms and orange stamens. It thrives in full sun and a variety of soil types, from sand to clay, and has deep roots that allow it to survive droughts and prairie fires. While it may die back in harsh winters, it typically recovers quickly in the following seasons. Lead Plant attracts numerous pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and moths, and serves as a host plant for the Dog Face Sulphur butterfly. Though deer-resistant once established, it may need protection during its early years from grazing animals.
