Asclepias viridiflora, or Short Green Milkweed, is a small plant reaching about 1 foot in height with light green flowers that turn yellowish or purplish green as they mature. It blooms in July and prefers dry, well-drained soil and full to partial sun. Known for attracting long-tongued bees, particularly bumblebees, it is also a host plant for monarch butterfly larvae. This milkweed grows individually, often overlooked for its non-showy green umbels, which resemble large green raspberries. Despite its subtle appearance, it provides valuable nectar for pollinators and serves as a host for monarchs, thriving in quality habitats such as open woodlands and grasslands.
